Baris is a traditional Balinese dance presenting the archetype of a brave and noble warrior. Its bold, dramatic, and electric movements are performed to the brilliant, scintillating sound of the gamelan.  It is the dance which any male dancer in Bali must learn first.

Several types of puppets are both popular and famous in Bali, but the Balinese have never used humanettes and, to the best of our knowledge, no Western humanettist has interpreted a Balinese dance.

Our humanette Baris is the second collaboration between Kompiang Metri Davies and Dudley Brooks.

Our diminutive “dancer” is too new to this world to have been photographed yet, but you can see a photo of his cousins, Marianne Humainette and George “Stumpy” Spelvin, who performed in the PuppetLOVE! 2003 festival,

and at http://www.zeitgeist.net/wfca/Sites-Pages/Image21.html

PuppetLOVE! 2004 has two evenings of radical puppetry performance and video showings (Thursday and Friday), a gallery of puppets and other art works (Wednesday through Saturday), workshops in all aspects of puppetry (Friday and Saturday), and a Kids Rad Puppet Mini-Fest in Berkeley (Sunday).
